SHOWTIME 98!
The schedules have been set, the exhibition games have been played, and from this point on, everything counts. The regular season is here. The second season of the PFL has arrived. And this time it is not an exhibition season. It is for real. The PFL World Championship Trophy is at stake. Which franchise will add their name to list of champions, along with San Francisco, as the proud winners of Super Bowl II? After months of speculation, scrimmages, scouting and grueling training camps, Sunday marks the start of a long journey of competitive obstacles, heartbreaks, thrills and agonies.
Week one with a thriller as the defending conference champion coaches, Teddy Brown and Kevin Fox, go head to head in as Green Bay rolls into Three Rivers Stadium to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Week one also features the monumental match up between the new and improved Philadelphia Eagles and the inconsistent Dallas Cowboys. Also featured in week one is Expansion Bowl 98 as the probate Kansas City Chiefs & Jacksonville Jaguars do battle. Are you ready for some football?

Clash Of The Titans
Brown vs. Fox In Week One

It's no secret that there is no love lost between these two coaches. But that is not the only reason that makes this match up the highlight ofng day. In addition to a winning tradition, strong competitive egos, these franchises are solid in almost every position on both sides of the ball. It will be the match up of two high powered offenses versus to stingy defenses. Something, somewhere has to give. That is what makes this game exciting to preview. Thus far in the preseason, Green Bay has had their way with everyone they have played with the exception of Philadelphia, who handed them their head on a platter. If Brown is smart he will follow Hilton's masterful game plan by capitalizing on any of Fox's' miscues and turning them into to scores. The opportunistic Philadelphia defense created three early interceptions and turned them into quick scores burying the Packers in a deficit that they could not over come. The Packers run a rhythmic offense. Fox likes to move the ball quickly and score quickly to create early leads. Pittsburgh does not want to get into a shoot out with the Pack. Instead, they must operate slow and methodically to take the Pack out of their game plan. The best defense for Pittsburgh is to leave Brett Favre and the Green Bay offense on the sideline, while Kordell Stewart masterfully engineers clocking grinding drives.

Keys to Pittsburgh Winning

Offensively

  • Steelers must attack the 3-4 defense early using dives and delays to Bettis and Lester
  • On passing situations, watch for Fox going to the 3-4 dbl. man, roll Kordell and give him the option of running or passing. Use motion to create overloads forcing a mismatch between a receiver and a defensive end. Here is where Brown must position his fastest receiver and get him in the slot. But be careful, Green Bay has some very fine defensive linemen with great speed and great cover ability.
  • Use Kordell's scrambling ability to breakdown coverage. If GB has a weakness, it is in the CB's.
  • Don't run towards Reggie White or Gilbert Brown. Try to run more behind the right guard or right tackle since Fox moves White around to get a pass rush.
  • Stay away from the screens and flats early until the middle of GB's defense has loosened up. Go deep early, scramble and run to force Fox to change his defensive scheme.

Defensively

  • Mix Blitzes, Nickel Man and Dime Press often. Also 3-4 man under, and exchange are good to mix into the defensive scheme depending upon the situation. Green Bay loves to run the FB man under. Dime man press is a very effective defense vs. this play. It's one of GB's favorite.
  • How GB runs the FB under
    • Favre looks primarily at four options. The first is usually Henderson the FB. Jam him at the line of scrimmage to slow down his timing. Second, Mayes in mtn. This is usually well covered by one of the safeties or dime backs, let him roam freely. Third, Dorsey Levens. This is a one on one match up with a DB. If Levens catches the ball in thefield, this favors GB. The DB MUST make thefield tackle or its a big gainer. Fourth, Antonio Freeman. Favre goes here only out of desperation. If you force Favre into this many reads, you will have the sack or a QB pressure.
  • Play the Pro Slants. When Fox has not been able to run the FB under effectively, he goes to the slants from the Pro formation. This is where Brown must take away his two options, Levens or Mayes. Sometimes the Pack will run this from the Normal set which means Chamura, the great TE becomes the motion man. 3-4 exchange should handle this with no problem.
  • Play Nickel Man against the Deep Ball. This also provides good deep coverage against Favre's go to guy, Derrick Mayes.
  • Finally, QB pressure. This is what Hilton used to create turnovers early in the game.

How does Green Bay match up against the Steelers?

Very well. The key for Green Bay is to incorporate more plays into it's repertoire. The Pack has been successful running a few basic plays with MANY different options. But Fox will need to use more of a diversified attack to win the big games, and this the seasonr is A BIG GAME. What happened when GB played Philadelphia was simply Fox not understanding how to attack the Nickel man early in the game. After reviewing the tape, once GB was down, they were completely out. This is where coaching composure for Fox is extremely important. To counter the Steelers plan of attack the Pack must run the ball effectively early. Forcing the pass plays, will more than likely lead to early turnovers and an early deficit. Fox must find ways to get the ball to Freeman and Brooks early to prevent Brown from sitting back playing Mayes or Chamura, the two primary passing targets for Favre.

Keys to Green Bay Winning

Defensively

  • Contain Yancy Thigpen. Thigpen is the man. He not only plays in the Wide Out position from the normal formation, he goes to the slot in the 3 wide and moves around from the four wide formation. GB must know where Thigpen is lining up in all formations at all time and provide blanket coverage.
  • Blitz, Blitz, Blitz.....Pittsburgh has a problems handling the blitz and Kordell will need extra time to find his receivers in this motion style offense. Fox should not allow his secondary to become victims of a weak pass rush. This is why he must mix the 3-4 storm with the dbl. man to confuse Stewart and put pressure on him. Brown will counter with quick passes to Bettis out of the backfield and that is why Fox must mix this defense up so Stewart does not know when either is coming.
  • Use some 3-4 man under mixed with inside blitzes to stop the run and the short underneath plays. Brown will go deep, but he likes to use Thigpen and Bettis early to do the dirty work picking up 6-10 yards on second or third down situations.
  • Be ready for the corner routes. The Corner routes are lethal vs. the 3-4 dbl. or any other defense that has LB's covering the slot receivers. Look for Stewart go go deep on Post Corners or Drags throughout the game.

Offensively

  • Take what the defense gives you instead of forcing the action. Pittsburgh will run from the 3-4 early using a mixture of exchange and man under and don't be surprised to see a little storm occasionally. To counter this, vs. the exchange/man under, out patterns work very well. But they must be perfectly timed.
  • Try to establish some kind of run threat vs. the 3-4 or the Steelers will play pass exclusively.
  • Attack the nickel/dime defenses with the slants or curls form the Pro set.
  • Establish a fast paced game moving the ball quickly but don't force the action. Use the hurry up offense when successful forcing Brown to either give up the big gainers or use his timeouts.

This will be a chess match and will probably come down to who use his substitutions the wisest and who is prepared with the best set of audibles for different situations. Field position will be critical, and look for who ever does not punt to give up easy scores. (at least a fg). However, I like the way Pittsburgh matches up against the Pack, and Brown will finally get some redemption from last year, so I like the Steelers in an upset by 1.
