The History of the PFL

It all started in the Fall of 1992 when Wayne Allen purchased Madden Football 92. He called his coaching colleague Anthony Smith to tell him about it. Allen, did not know Israel (The Swammi) very well at the time. Israel was Anthony's good friend and roommate. Anthony soon told The Swammi and Wayne invited them both over to check out the new game. Back then, there where no names to identify the players... .just numbers. This of course was before EA Sports and the NFL entered into a licensing agreement. There were no bluff modes or fourth and fifth receivers either. The game was in it's simplest form. And despite the fact that the game had no season options or running stats, commentary or penalties, we enjoyed it, just as it was. The three of us saw a bright future for Madden Football. Fortunately for us, EA Sports did as well. As technology advanced, so did the game. Before EA added seasons and statistics to it's game, we were already doing it. The Swammi, using a spreadsheet program compiled statistics in several meaningful categories. He also made up the schedule for each team. The three picked two teams, one from the NFC and one from the AFC. Wayne always went with the Dolphins and the 49ers. Swam is a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan. His AFC team was Buffalo. And Smith, he was a Redskin, Oiler guy.

The three of them continued to play in the league until another friend, Tony Womack, began to watch and decided he wanted some of the action. After a couple of exhibition games, Tony had owned his own Sega Genesis system and Madden 95. The Mack was in "The League." In the summer of 1995, good friend Anthony moved back to Louisiana. Edgar Rubio, who was working with Tony, joined the league to take Anthony's place. By then Madden had it's own season with schedules in place. So everyone picked one team. Wayne - the 49ers, Mack - the Dolphins, Swammi - the Cowboys and Rubio - The Bills. They followed the schedule that Madden had made for them. They played with thei own team vs. someone else in the league playing as the scheduled opponent. The competition was fierce. More and more people began to ask about THE LEAGUE. During this time, a great change was about to occur. THE LEAGUE switched from the Sega, to the Playstation. All the guys who were inquiring about THE LEAGUE all went out and purchased Playstations as well. Womack came forth with the idea to form a formal league and get more players involved. He bought the idea to Wayne and The Swam. Swammi got in touch with all interested members and scheduled a meeting. This was the first owners meeting of the PFL. Womack drew up the constitution and bylaws. After a meeting of Wayne, Womack, and The Swam, the Executive Council of THE LEAGUE was formed and thus the birth of the PFL.

At our first meeting, 12 owners came to submit their franchises for membership. Israel presented all teams with their schedules and the PFL was off and running. The PFL is about to began it's fifth full season of play.
