Ryan
Collins becomes the 3rd PFL baller to play in two straight Superbowls.
The Creator was the first to accomplish the task in 98-99. Brooks
did it 2000-2001, and now Collins 2001-2002. Gresham has been the
only baller to win two titles. Collins will attempt to add his name
to this elite club when he faces Steve Stewart in PFL Superbowl
VI.
Collins
ran through the PFL again this season with a nearly perfect 15-1
record. He faces an opponent he destroyed in week 4 of the PFL season
73-35. But that may have been a different Stewart.
Collins
should expect to see a smarter, more creative and more confident
Stewart in the Superbowl. But if you ask Collins, he doesnıt care.
³Iım gonna mutt Steve,² he exclaimed after his close 16-14 win over
Dell Barton. ³This just make it easier for me to win the title.
I would rather play Steve than Brooks.²
Nevertheless,
Collins is right back where is he used to being, on top and in the
big games. The former University of Miami standout is not shy about
letting his confidence in his abilities be known. ³Swammi, I will
win this league every year,² he boasted after his win over Barton.
When asked about his game vs. Barton, Collins replied, ³He plays
me good in front of other people, he just canıt beat me. Iım in
his head. I have mind control over Dell.²
Barton
was leading 7-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the first
half, when he allowed Collins to take control of the game with two
quick scores inside the two minute mark to go up 14-7. Barton tied
the game in the third 14-14, before making the fatal mistake of
attempting to pass out of his own endzone. Collins sent the heat
and got the sack to give the Saints a safety and a two point lead.
That's the way the game stood.
Collins
Loves To "Mutt Em"
It's
become Collins signature phrase. You can hear it at least 10-15
times on any given Sunday at Bru's room. "Who? I'll mutt (fill
in the blank with any player's name)!" Collin's is always talking
about mutting someone. And for good reason most of the time.
He
show's very little respect for most of his opponents in terms of
game preparations and focus. While most PFL ballers are in the lab
working on game plans for Sunday, Collins gets his practice by beating
up on non PFL ballers that are willing to stop in at the 1-9-3-9.
And although he may not spend as much ³lab time² as most ballers,
the 1-9-3-9 has quality comp aside from the PFL studs, James Brooks,
Dell Barton, Rod Lucas and Tyrell Conyers and Steve Stewart.
Two
of Collins "muttin" sessions occured against Joe Hilton
and the Jags. Hilton finished a sparkling 13-3 last season, a record
Collins called drastically overated. These two didnıt get a chance
to face one another last season, but this season, they have locked
horns three times, including an early meeting in the PFL kickoff
classic. Collins dominated all three games.
Meanwhile,
the Jags have fallen on hard times this season. His game console
went a muck before the season started causing Hilton to fall behind
in his game preparation early. And early in the season he faced
the likes of Wayne Allen, Tyrell Conyers and Collins in the first
four weeks. Throughout the season, Hilton struggle to get more than
a game above .500 and finished with a controversial 9-7 record.
After an impressive performance over Wayne Allen in the NFC Wildcard,
Hilton faces his new nemesis Collins, for the fourth time this season.
Collins
is super confident coming into the game. ³I donıt see Hilton,² he
exclaimed after the Jags demolished the 49ers 42-14. ³I will mutt
em!²
The
Jags will have to play their best game of the season to upset the
high flying Saints. Hilton will need to play Collins similar to
how Rod Lucas played, or even The Swammi. Run the ball, and convert
third downs. Otherwise, if Hilton falls behind Collins early as
he has in previous games....its good night Irene...see you in my
dreams.
Saints
Shot At Repeat Increases
Collins
biggest threat to foil his chances for a return to the PFL may not
be here to finish his PFL season. Tyrell Conyers, considered by
many as one of the few in the NFC capable of dethroning Collins,
may be headed to New York City for a career change. The move may
occur as early as the end of April. If so, Conyers, who has already
clinched a playoff spot would in effect have to forfeit the remaining
games on the schedule or in the playoffs.
Collins
and Conyer squared off two weeks ago with Collins taking it 21-13.
The Steelers two costly turnovers deep in Collins territory could
have very well cost Conyers the game. The confident Collins has
taken control of the Big 5 division with an 11-1 record. The lone
blemish coming at the hands of The Swammi who is the AFC. With Conyers
out of the picture Collins road to PFL Superbowl 6 just got alot
less bumpy. With Conyers one game back at 10-2, these two are headed
for a collision for the division title. Collins should run the table
as should Conyers meaning the two could very land in week 16 with
a 15-1, 14-2 records respectively. Conyers could grab a share of
the division title, forcing it to go to the tie break system if
if the above scenario would unfold, and the Steelers won the final
game of the season.
Not
that Dell Barton won't pose as a formidable opponent. Barton almost
pulled an upset in week 6. And for as good as Teddy B! is playing,
at 9-3, he has not demonstrated against Barton that he can defense
a potent pass attack like Collins possesses.
Conyers
departure takes a great bit of drama and suspense out of what could
possibly happen in the NFC. Nevertheless, Conyers taking advantage
of this career move is a chance he may not be able to pass up.
Saints
Early Miscues Take Toll
from 3/17/02
The
champ took one on the chin Sunday for the first time this season
as the aggressive Cowboys shocked the surprised Saints 37-16. After
Dallas went 3 and out on its initial possession, Collins threw an
interception on the first play of hisng drive. Dallas drove
in for the score to lead 7-0. On the Saint ensuing drive, Darren
Hambrick scooped up an Aaron Brooks fumble and scampered 38 yards
for the score. All of a sudden, the Saints were down 14-0. On the
Saints next possession early in the second quarter, Collins was
picked off again, which lead to another Dallas score. Bru's room
was shocked as Dallas was up 21-0 over the defending champ early
in the second quarter. The Cowboys added another score to go up
28-0 before the Saints got on the board in late in the second quarter.
From there Dallas milked the clock and kicked field goals to cruise
to the 37-16 win.
The
Saints turnovers early combined with Dallas controlling the pace
of the game lead to Collins demise. Dallas held the ball an astonishing
27:15 to Collins 8:45.
Next
week the Saints take on the 7-1 Steelers, who dropped from the ranks
of the unbeaten Sunday also after a 35-28 loss to Minnesota.

Just In.........This Guy Is Good
from week 5 (3/3/02)
The
Champ took Dell Barton's best punch,
and he is still the undefeated king of the PFL. Ryan Collins is
on a mission ot 16-0 this season. Last
season, Collins seemed well on his way to clinch a 16-0 record
after defeating Dell Barton and James Brooks
in the 2001 regular
season. It seemed as if no one would stand in his way of PFL
immortality. No one except Collins himself, a bit inebriated facing
Kwan Drake
in week 14 last year. Drake seized the moment and took advantage
of the unfocused Collins and spoiled his bid for an undefeated season.
This
year, Collins has someone else at his heels. Tyrell Conyers, the
impressive new rookie with his Pittsburgh Steelers. Conyers is also
making a push for an undefeated season. But something will give
two weeks when these two collide. In the meantime, if Collins can
past Tony Gray (Denver) and The Swammi (Dallas), and Conyers can
get by Hines (Tenn) and Brooks (Minnesota), these two may very well
line it up at 10-0.
Collins
offense is running on high octane. His passing
numbers are off the chart for the first six weeks of the season,
and he runs the ball effective, but only when he has to. Anchored
by a solid d-line, Collins defense has been consistently effective
as well.
Over
the course of the next
three games Collins should take care of business. Which means
the anticipation of what could be a preview of the NFC championship
game is beginning to mount.

Collins
Still On Tear
From Weeks 3/4
When he is hot.....he
is hot. And defending PFL champion Ryan Collins was hot on Sunday.
So hot that he torched Steve Stewart and the Bears 73-35.
The lopsided score
may not have been as bad it was had Stewart not committed his own
self inflicted wounds. For instance, with the game tied at 14 early
in the second quarter, Stewart decided to go for a 4th and 23 deep
in his own territory. Collins defense stiffened and the tide shifted
swiftly in the Saints favor. Collins proceeded to run off 18 straight
points, to go to the locker room at 32-14.
Collins scored
again on theng drive of the second half to go up 39-14, and
from there it became desperation for Stewart. Collins defense simply
"teed" off on the pass happy Stewart, and kept the game
at his comfortable excellerated pace.
For Collins, that
is 70, 46, and 73 points in three games. He is on an insane pace
to destroy every scoring record ever held in the PFL.
Collins currently
has Aaron Brooks ranked as the #1 ranked quarterback in the league
after four weeks.

More
on Ryan Collins.....
Collins
Rips Competition Onng Day
(from 2/17/02)
It
seemed to be another day at the office for PFL defending champion
Ryan Collins, who went on a scoring frenzy Sunday first lambasting
Kwan Drake and the Tampa Bay Bucs 70-18, then dismantling #17 ranked
James Brooks 46-21.
"I don't want
anyone to think they can play with me," quipped Collins after
his mercifulness pounding of Drake. "I'm using the PFL as my
tune up for Nationals IV. There are about 4 or 5 real good ballers
in THE LEAGUE, and when I play them, I want to get my game ready,"
the defending champ stated.
Drake took a 6-0
lead into the second quarter before Collins woke up and found his
stride. And once he did, he put on a show, for all the spectators
viewing the game. Aaron Brooks threw for an amazing 729 yards and
9...thats right 9 touchdowns, earning Collins Swammi's Peak Performance
Honors.
In his second game,
Collins exploded again, this time on James Brooks, in a rematch
of PFL Superbowl V. Brooks also took the early lead 7-0. Then Collins
scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes to claim the lead
at 14-7. From there he never look backed. "I had to get serious
with James," Collins said in his press conference. I had just
finished playing Drake earlier, and I was smelling myself, thinking
I could do anything. I had to settle down and play smart football."
Next week Collins
takes on Joe Hilton. "I going to try to score 100 on Hilton,"
Collins remarked after his win over Brooks. In his second game,
Collins will face PFL rookie, Steve Stewart.
