Sandman: No One Play Wonder
Sandman's most gratifying moment Saturday may not have been earning
the title of co champion, and picking up a share of the Gametime
Philly Throwback Tournament winnings. It very well may have been
avenging the Mega Bowl Championship loss to Young Gunz when the
two of them met in the final 8. For it was after that loss that
labeled The Sandman as a one play gimmick player. But Sandman
showed Saturday that his game, while simple, is not as simple
as running one play all the time. His 38-28 convincing win over
Young Gunz raised the Sandman's stock, placing him back at the
top of the pack with the top contenders for Nationals. Davey,
as he is sometimes known made the critical adjustments vs. Young
Gunz that enabled him to run his offense effectively. Defensively,
he held the Gunz potent offense to 21 points through 4 quarters
before Gunz scored late to make it a 38-28 final.

Sandman's critical adjustment was flipping his potent shotgun
4 wide to provide better protection from the side Gunz was bringing
the heat. That simple but key adjustment gave Davey the extra
time he needed to scramble with Steve Young to take advantage
of Gunz one on one coverage. While Gunz stick control is probably
noted right now as the best in the nation, Davey is not far behind.
His stick with Steve Young was the crucial key allowing him to
mix his crossing routes and corners effectively.
Sandman's most recent two performances also makes him one of
the ballers to beat come Nationals. The Mega Bowl runner up stated
in his his post game interview that he did suffer from an acute
case of tunnel vision during his Mega Bowl game vs. Young Gunz.
However, he went on to state that he felt mentally he didn't play
his best game, and was not focused do to factors away from the
game itself.
"I do have a philosophy that says if you can't stop something,
I'm going to keep running it until you prove you can," Davey
stated after his win over Gunz. "But that was not the case
here. I had to change up my game to beat a great player like Gunz."
Sandman found himself changing teams throughout the tourney.
First arriving with the 98 Vikings, but switching to the 98 98ers
because of the taller secondary. Davey stated the Viking DB's
were getting creamed in his round robin games, thus he knew he
had to make a change. The Niners were just right to match up with
the rest of the field. With solid corners and safeties in place,
Sandman was able to tee off on Gunz and apply the pressure while
still exploding on offense.
Hopefully for the community, this is the first of many big battles
between these two young, but very talented ballers.
