Custom Play Death Of Packers
Kevin Fox has made it clear that if you can't stop his custom
offense, then he will run it down your throat. Watching the Packers
unmercifully run his double screens and other custom plays has
sparked a debate in the PFL as to whether or not custom plays
take away from the game. Nevertheless, the dependency of the custom
play may have been the cause of Fox's second loss in the AFC title
game in the last three years. 94% of the Packers plays came from
the custom set. While his opponent James Brooks rarely, if at
any time used any type of custom play designed for the offense.
While it is true that Fox had been successful all season with
his style of play the lack of default plays in the game plan could
have hampered him. "The fact that Brooks only had to defend
three plays the entire game caught up with Fox in the end,"
stated The Swammi. "Brooks new that the ball was going either
to Dorsey (Levens) or Mayes from the 5 wide. When Fox showed Shotgun
2RB it was either double screen or flares to Levens or Mayes once
again."
And so it was,
the Minnesota defense stiffened and forced crucial turnovers on
potential scoring drives for Fox. It all went back to Brooks ability
to play the customs in the second half. The biggest surprise was
that Fox didn't use his 1000 yard rusher, Dorsey Levens in the
running game but once, and that was for -1 yard.
Fox is the kind
of opponent that plays tougher defense when he is ahead, If he
has to play from behind, he is easily stymied and that effects
his defense. That is what happened in the second half. Once the
Pack closed to within 10 points at 35-25 early in the third, Brooks
rolled off 21 unanswered points and cruised in the final 6 minutes
of the game to seal his first trip to the Super Bowl. The Green
Bay defense was battered and beaten, as was Fox's ego.
The humbled
coach stated after the game that he wishes Brooks the best vs.
Buffalo in order to keep the trophy in the AFC.
