Fox's Heart May Earn Packers
A Playoff Spot
Just when you counted him out, just when it seemed as though he
was finished for the season, just as when it seemed as though
the odds were against him, Kevin Fox showed why he is one of the
PFL's winningest coaches by winning four straight to force a one
game playoff for the right to enter the PFL wildcard round and
a date with the team he destroyed Sunday, Detroit. Fox showed
flashes of his old game Sunday. A punishing running attack, great
secondary play, and a verticle passing game. Fox came in on a
mission Sunday. Determined to do more than just have a lackluster
finish to the season, the first order of business for the 1997
exhibition season champ was to make up games from week 11
& 12 that were missed. Then he had to defeat both Wayne
Allen and Dell Barton, a tall task in itself. Fox took care
of the big chores first. He first shutdown the 49er scoring machine,
beating Wayne Allen 28-10. He then lined up against Dell Barton,
the same Dell Barton that shellacked him 64-10 a month earlier.
With a possible playoff berth at stake, Fox buckled down and played
with a quiet confidence, unseen from the Packers in quite some
time. After Barton jumped out to his customary early lead, Fox
kept himself in the game capitalizing on 2 Lion turnovers. Once
the Pack assumed the lead, Fox prevailed 33-23.
After tackling
the tougher obstacles, Fox went on to romp the Giants
41-9, and in his finale, the Dolphins
fell prey 31-13. That pushed Fox to 7-9, all of a sudden contending
for a playoff spot. Alvin Barrow
seemed to all but lock up a playoff berth, but a loss to Tennessee
kept Fox's hopes alive. Now the Packers and Raiders will square
off for a one game playoff to determine who will face the Lions
in the wildcard round of the AFC playoffs.
