Rubio leaves Barry Sanders and the Lions up for grabs.

Trouble In The Motor City
Rubio Resigns

Edgar Rubio, coach of the PFL Detroit Lion informed Deputy Commissioner Womack that effective Monday April 20, 1998 at 4:00 PM he would no longer serve as coach/owner of the PFL Detroit Lions. Rubio has been a League member since 1995, when THE LEAGUE was in it's early beginning playing on Sega Systems. When the PFL was formed, Rubio moved over from the Buffalo Bills to Detroit Lions. Last year, the Lions finished a disappointing 3-13 and were left out of the playoff race. The announcement came as a surprise to THE LEAGUE because Rubio was present on Exhibition Sunday, and did not state to anyone that he planned to resign. However, in early March, Rubio did comment to Deputy Commissioner Womack that he did have a problem with a Sundays being the official League day. Deputy Commissioner Womack in turn suggested to Rubio that an alternative day such as Mondays be used as a clean up day for games that did not take place on Sunday, and that Rubio could very well play his games on those evenings with other members that are not able to make a Sunday commitment. Initially, Rubio did not seem to object to this as an alternative. But on Monday, Rubio informed THE LEAGUE, that he would not be interested in playing on any other day but the official League day, stating, "part of the enjoyment of THE LEAGUE is the camaraderie amongst the fellows, not just to play a game and go home." Rubio was not present at the Spring owners meeting held in early March. It was at this meeting that THE LEAGUE voted Sundays as the official game day.

Drake May Be Back

Reports out of the New River training facility state that Kwon Drake, former coach/owner of the Carolina Panthers may be interested in making a return to the PFL. Sources close to Drake are saying that he (Drake) would be interested in taking over the Tampa Bay franchise if THE LEAGUE reinstates him as an official member. Drake decided during the off season that the commitment to this PFL season may have been a bit much and decided to take a year off. However, after reconsidering, and after the events in Detroit, it is apparent that Drake has had a change of heart. If Drake is to return, he would simply take the same schedule the Lions had and each team that was scheduled to play the Lions would face the Bucs instead.
