Hosting Dates Set
Screening committee
chair Tony Womack has announced the first screening event for perspective PFL
members in preparation for the 2005 Madden season. All perspective members seeking
entrance into the PFL are required by PFL By-Laws to host a PFL sponsored event
in addition to attending a league sponsored event to become eligible for membership.
Committee chair
Womack has designated November 13 as the date of the first screening event.
Womack will host the event at his home in West Palm Beach, FL beginning at 5:00
PM ET - Until.
THE LEAGUE instituted
the screening process in 2000 as a means to evaluate an applicants competitive
level as well as his intended commitment to THE LEAGUE. The applicants skills
on the sticks are measured as well as sportsmanship and attitude. Each candidate
will be interviewed one on one by screening committee chair Womack.
"We think
the keys that have enabled the PFL to remain in existence for 9 years are in
its structure, its foundation, and our ability to attract quality individuals
to be in the league," states committee chair Womack who served as the leagues
first deputy commissioner from 1997-2001. "Competition is important, but
it comes second to league camaraderie, sportsmanship and character." Former
commissioner Swammi agrees. "A good league is not made up of 'top ballers'
only," states Swam. "There are a lot of leagues that have had top
ballers, but the while those ballers may still be playing, the leagues don't
exist anymore. That's not the case with the PFL. 9 years is a long time, and
we are probably the oldest league in the nation, with the exception of the BFL.
That is due primarily to our structure, and the ability to have quality guys
in our organization, and that's why the screening process so important."
"We want our
new guys to come into THE LEAGUE understanding the history and tradition of
the PFL," Womack continued. "The screening program will place an emphasis
on that this season."
Commissioner Hines
reported that there have been approximately 10 new applications for franchises
from perspective members. "I'm not sure how many we will be accepting,"
states Hines. "We have to wait until the screening committee does their
thing, and bring us a report at the winter owners meeting, and then we will
go from there.
Although this first
event will be held in Palm Beach, Womack states there will be two more, one
in Dade, and one in Broward. Subsequent dates and times will be selected at
the initial event on the 13th.
Any applicant that
has not been contacted by the screening committee or has not received information
on this event should contact chairperson Tony Womack immediately at antonio.womack
