Expect
The Unexpected
Kwan Drake always has an array of weapons, gadgets and scheme's
designed to confuse and frustrate opponents. Expect the same this
year from the 5 year PFL veteran. In 2000, opponents did not know
whether to fear Mike Alstott running, or Trent Dilfer running the
qb draw, a play that Drake designed using the custom play editor.
Without the custom play editor at his disposal this season, Drake
will have to go back to drawing board to modify his attack. The
good news is he has some of the best weapons in the game on both
sides of the ball.
Philosophy
Drake has been known
to mix gadgetry and razzle dazzle with solid fundamental football
to pound his opponents into submission. He loves to run it with
Alstott and Dunn, mixing it up well inside and outside. Then he
complements his running game with big plays to Jaquez Green. In
2001, Bert Emmanuel was his primary go to guy. But Emmanuel gone
for Miami, Drake has upgraded the stable of fine receivers with
the addition of all pro WR Keyshawn Johnson. Look for Drake to use
Johnson deep as well as a possession receiver. Defensively, Drake
traditionally plays a great deal of 3-4 and Nickel, mixing solid
man coverage with quarter zones and unders. The special teams will
be Drake's best friend, typically in those low scoring defensive
battles against division rival Buffalo. With the iron legged Martin
Grammatica, Drake can boot 48+ yard FG's with ease and consistency.
Forecast
The big question
this season for the Bucs is not whether or not they will make the
playoffs. More than likely they will. The biggest question for the
PFL's 6th all time winningest coach is, what will they do when they
get there. Each year, Drake drives his troops into the playoffs
only to loose in the first or second round each time. This may be
his best chance to get to the promise land. But with tough division
opponents such as Buffalo and Carolina, it won't be easy.
