Our founder, J. Milton Eckerd, established his business on a simple, sincere promise: to care for his patients. A promise kept when hed the very first Eckerd drugstore in 1898. At that time, most drugstores kept the prices of medications artificially high. J. Milton offered "cut rate" prices, so his patients could afford the medicines they needed. He also accepted goods in trade from patients who were short on cash.
While farm implements are no longer accepted as a form of payment, more than a century later, Eckerd Pharmacies are fulfilling the promise J. J. Milton's son, Jack, built on the promise his father made by introducing a concept which changed the face of drugstore retailing forever - convenience. In the booming 1950's, as lives became busier, Jack focused on "self-service" to make shopping easier and quicker. No longer would customers have wait for clerks to pick items off the shelves, but could select products themselves and be on their way. Retailers from drugstores to department stores, clothiers, even grocery stores, copied the practice.
Today's Eckerd drugstore is designed with convenience and ease of shopping in mind. Many of our locations are stand-alone units at major intersections, with easy access to parking, wide aisles which let shoppers move freely about the store, a complete product selection, including refrigerated foods, and drive-thru prescription pick-up windows.
